For my Photo I final we were required to explore the concept of photography in relation to memory. This is my end-product.

I chose to portray myself as a boy rather than choosing to photograph a ‘real’ boy because I thought it contrasted moreso using the same face. Men are allowed to have blemishes and ‘mistakes’ while women are expected to be perfect because of the ideals society places on them. Also, I chose to photograph myself twice instead of two separate subjects because I wanted to prove that gender can be fluid, and how you choose to represent yourself is what influences others’ perception of you. How you were born biologically does not matter, only how you choose to make yourself appear. I wanted to abstract the body using the pieces of the body that take the most damage: the hands, which are constantly being used for every day tasks, the wrists, which are needed to make the hands function properly, the feet, which move people from place to place and are needed in order to be mobile without a hassle, the toes, which take the most damage from consistent walking, the heel, which bends the most to make the feet move, and the backs of the legs, which also bend to move the body. However, because gender is so fluid, the body parts come from a biological woman and a biological man. When the body parts are abstracted and placed side-by-side, it’s harder to tell which sex the body parts belong to. Effectively proving that gender, is indeed, perception.](http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m3zuu7ZbwZ1qzee2qo1_500.jpg)
